I'm used to Air America on the AM dial -- I catch Rachel, Thom, etc. on 1400 WHMP in Northampton, MA all the time. But I'd never heard of Mario Solis Marich until this week, when, for work reasons, I had to tune him in ... and there he was talking about my favorite personal pet topic -- medical tourism.
(Blog post and audio link)
I've previously speculated that medical travel and tourism -- people traveling abroad for medical care when they, for whatever reason, can't afford it in the United States -- was going to be part of the debate over healthcare reform in the U.S. (I wrote a book on the subject, Beauty from Afar, in 2006.)
But with the AMA weighing in, the EU moving forward ... how long is it going to be before someone stands up at a town meeting and asks a presidential candidate what they think of Americans getting healthcare abroad? It's an option that is already making its way into benefits packages.
When that happens, what would we expect the candidates to say?
Thanks. Despite the self-referential links, I'm really curious as to how people see the political implications of this.
